DC Museums: Weekly Links

  • Plans for the Hirshhorn “bubble”―an inflatable pavilion that will host a salon-like conference series―received a key approval this week. I still think it makes the museum look diseased.
  • The Smithsonian signed a deal with QVC to produce a line of jewelry based on its gem and mineral collection. Tacky, but might bring in much-needed revenue for museum maintenance.
  • The Post’s Marc Fisher has some interesting things to say about the Balkanization of DC’s museums, in the guise of a review of the new German-American Heritage Museum. The background on how the GAHM developed―as a response to the Holocaust Museum―is particularly interesting, but the museum itself is a huge disappointment: It’s one room and not very engaging. If you’re looking for a German cultural fix, head up the street to the Goethe Institut , which has a full slate of films and exhibitions planned for the summer.
