After surviving DC’s violent #derecho storms last night, I sought a moment of calm this morning at the Corcoran Gallery. Today marks the opening of Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series, an impressive exhibit of the artist’s abstract work from the 1960s through the 1980s, painted in his Ocean Park studio near Santa Monica, CA.
The video above gives a sense of the scale of these paintings– the angles, light and layers– but you really need to see them live. I couldn’t agree more that the Corcoran is the perfect place to show these; the size of the galleries and the natural light seem to echo what Diebenkorn was striving for.
I’m glad this show made its one East Coast stop in Washington.
